The DeSoto County School District has officially launched its first Career Exploration Series cohort focused on aviation, creating a direct pipeline for seniors across all eight district high schools to explore careers in one of the region’s most critical and high-demand industries.
This inaugural Aviation cohort brings together a select group of seniors who have expressed a clear interest in pursuing aviation-related career pathways. The series is designed to provide structured, real-world exposure through four targeted sessions that connect students with industry professionals, postsecondary programs, and hands-on learning experiences.
The first session, held February 25, provided students with exclusive access to Memphis International Airport. Students participated in a behind-the-scenes tour, gaining firsthand insight into airport operations, logistics, and the wide range of careers required to keep a major international airport functioning efficiently.
Following the airport visit, students traveled to the University of Memphis, where they engaged with faculty and staff from the Aviation Management program. The visit included an in-depth overview of the program and hands-on time in the university’s flight simulators, allowing students to experience the technical precision and decision-making required in aviation careers.
“This initiative represents a strategic investment in our students and in the future workforce of our region,” said district leadership. “Aviation is a cornerstone industry in the Mid-South, and it is essential that we intentionally connect our students to these opportunities while they are still in high school.”
Future sessions in the series will expand student exposure to additional aviation sectors, including engagement with operations at Olive Branch Airport, regional flight schools, aviation maintenance professionals, and postsecondary aviation programs at Delta State University.
The Career Exploration Series reflects the district’s broader commitment to aligning student experiences with workforce needs and ensuring graduates are prepared to enter high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand career fields.
By providing early access to industry and postsecondary partners, DeSoto County Schools continues to position its students for long-term success while strengthening the talent pipeline that supports economic growth across the region.
