DeSoto County Students Continue Aviation Career Exploration with Cohort Session #3
The DeSoto County School District Aviation Cohort recently completed Session #3 of its ongoing Career Exploration Series, providing students with another outstanding opportunity to experience the many career pathways available within the aviation industry. This initiative continues to connect students with real-world professionals, postsecondary partners, and hands-on learning experiences designed to broaden awareness of high-demand careers.
The day began at the Olive Branch Airport, where students toured airport operations and facilities through arrangements coordinated by Derrick Hill and Dave Taylor. During the visit, students also had the unique opportunity to stop at a private hangar owned by retired FedEx pilot Steve, who showcased his rare 1940 UPF-7 aircraft. Students learned about the history of this open-cockpit biplane trainer, originally produced by the Waco Aircraft Company and recognized for its role in pilot training and aviation history.
The cohort then visited the Luke Weathers Flight Academy. Students received a presentation from Greyson Coleman, coordinated by Dartenya Davis, highlighting aviation training opportunities and pathways into professional flight careers.
Next, students visited Air Venture Flight Center, where they toured the school, explored aircraft and maintenance operations, and learned more about aviation instruction programs. Special appreciation goes to Jessie Sawyer for her leadership in helping coordinate this experience and for generously providing lunch for the group. Her partnership and investment in student success played a major role in making this session possible.
The final stop of the day was Northwest Mississippi Community College, where students toured the Aviation Maintenance program. Calvin Cooper, Program Director and Instructor, along with Instructor David Lindsey, shared valuable information about aircraft maintenance careers, technical training, and the growing workforce demand for certified aviation technicians and Kelsey Baker shared with students the application and selection process.
The Aviation Cohort Series remains a strategic investment in workforce readiness, exposing students to careers that are critical to the regional economy. DeSoto County School District is proud to continue building partnerships that create meaningful opportunities and help students chart a course for future success.
